Advanced 3D Digital Documentation of Material Culture

The AHRC-funded Digital Skills In Visual And Material Culture network service will host a two-and-a-half-day workshop as part of its training activities on 5-7 February 2024, at the University of Brighton.

The workshop aims to upskill researchers and practitioners in 3D digitisation methods for enhancing the documentation of visual and material culture. The sessions will focus on creating 3D models using photogrammetry, as well as capturing 360° photographs, both methods useful for the documentation and access of Cultural Heritage objects and environments. During the sessions we will explore the different parts of the photogrammetry and 360° photographs process (equipment, setup, data acquisition and processing), and will look at different types of use cases/examples in the arts and humanities environment. The workshop focuses on material culture within Higher Education, Galleries, Libraries, Archives, Museums (GLAMs), and the creative industries, as well as communities around the world.

Cost and Registration

The workshop is free, but we request that attendees register through Eventbrite. All participants will have to commit to attending the workshop for three days. Attendees will need to bring their own laptops for the training, and please let us know if this is an issue at the time of registration.

We are able to offer this event without a registration fee thanks to our funding. If for whatever reason, you register and become aware that you will no longer be able to join us, please consider cancelling your registration, as this will help us avoid incurred costs.

Bursaries

Bursaries for travel and subsistence will be available for a limited number of UK-based attendees whose remit is to research subjects in the arts and humanities at different levels, including researchers and practitioners working in GLAMs and the creative industries. The bursaries will cover travel (within the UK) and accommodation (up to 3 nights) to enable attendance at the workshop. All bursary applicants will have to commit to attending the workshop for three days.

The application deadline for both the workshop and the bursaries is January 21, 2024, at 9 pm. To apply for a bursary, you need to commit to attending for the three days. Please send an email to info@culturedigitalskills.org when registering for the workshop, including: 

• Your name, affiliation, type of organisation (HEI, GLAM, Creative Sector) career status (undergraduate student, postgraduate student, researcher, practitioner, other);

• A short statement on the context of your research, including the research aims, methodology and timeline;

• A description of how you plan to apply the skills acquired during the workshop;

• A short statement on how you plan to share this knowledge.
