Digital Fabrication to Improve Visual Collections’ Access

For more than two decades the heritage and research community have been witnessing the development of 3D technologies to facilitate various cultural heritage management processes within GLAMs and HEIs. Such technologies include digital fabrication and particularly low-cost and accessible 3D printing, which in the last decade has enabled novel modalities of interpretation and mutlisensorial experiences with collections involving access to replicas. This webinar will focus on digital fabrication in the context of heritage experiences, while examining the state-of-the-art in 3D digital fabrication for cultural heritage communication by looking at different examples where this technology has been used around the world.

In the webinar, we will also look at participatory approaches involving heritage communities, alongside the employment of the technology for decolonisation efforts. Within this frame, will also discuss the challenges that organisations and communities face when it comes to the use of digital fabrication for decolonisation and repatriation efforts, including the lack of funds and knowledge as some of the barriers to embrace technology. Lastly, we will refer to the means to unleash the potential of digital fabrication in heritage communication in the future.
