Handwritten text extraction with Transkribus Lite (beginner level)

The AHRC-funded Hot Source! project is organising an online webinar as part of its training activities on the 7^th of February 2024, from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. 

This webinar is an introduction to Transkribus Lite, an app designed for Handwritten Text Recognition (HTR), making historical documents more readable and accessible. Transkribus Lite has been developed by the READ project, which is focused on handwritten text recognition, transcription, and the digitisation of historical documents, especially those that contain handwritten text.  

This webinar is suitable for researchers, historians and archivists who deal with historical documents containing handwritten text. Transkribus Lite can significantly speed up the process of transcribing such materials, making them more accessible for research. The app is widely used in the field of Digital Humanities and historical document analysis, with more than 1,700 regular users. 

The webinar will focus on the workflow that the users need to follow; from uploading the document to the app, identifying text zones, and applying models for transcription, to training and running an HTR model based on the structure of the document.  

In addition to this webinar, participants can register for a 1:1 ‘Practical Surgery’ session on the 14^th of February. 

This is a beginner level webinar. No previous knowledge or experience in programming is required. However, for more experience of Optical Character Recognition you can also attend the Printed text extraction with ABBYY FineReader software (beginner level). For more experience in digitising archival material, you can attend the Introduction to Digital Photography and Digitisation (beginner level).
