Multidimensional data for the study of energy efficiency of heritage buildings – Closed

Applications are invited for an Arts, Design, Architecture or Humanities researcher to undertake an internship, supported by a stipend, to develop their digital skills for the sustainable management of heritage buildings. The internship seeks to develop skills in reviewing, processing and improving the quality of existing digital data, interacting with digital data and creating value from digital data.

Context

As part of Brighton & Hove Museums (B&HM) NPO funding from Arts Council England, B&HM is committed to running a test bed for digital innovation with local partners. One strand of this innovation programme is to explore ways of using digital technology to improve the energy efficiency of B&HM’s buildings and support their broader sustainability ambitions.The internship will enable an Arts or Humanities researcher to contribute towards a better understanding of the relevant data B&HM hold and its potential. Besides developing the digital skills of the intern, the internship will support the work necessary to organise the data and make it usable for the partnership over the next three years.

Internship

During the internship, in consultation with the project team, the researcher will:

1) Review, process and assess the quality of the data B&HM holds, which will include energy use data, environmental monitoring data, and 3D models of buildings.

2) The intern will produce a report that a) summarises the available data; b) makes recommendations on how it may be best stored, accessed and visualised internally; c) identify its potential to be repurposed eg digital twins.

3) Contribute to creating proof of concept prototypes demonstrating how this data may be used.

The internship requires 75 hours of work over 4 weeks (flexibly arranged) and will be supported with a stipend of £1,300. The intern will work on a hybrid format with periods working on-site and regular meetings with project staff. The intern will be supervised by Kevin Bacon, Head of Digital, and Karina Rodriguez Echavarria, Centre for Secure, Intelligent and Usable Systems, University of Brighton.

The successful intern would be asked to participate in an optional evaluation reflecting on their placement and skills development in order to inform a potential future Centre for Digital Skills in Visual and Material Culture.

Requirements

It is expected that the criteria below regarding knowledge, qualifications and interest will be met by the successful candidate. It is essential they have:

• Good first degree, preferably at 1^st or upper 2^nd class level, in Architecture or a related subject in the Arts or Humanities

• Good data literacy and data visualisation skills

• General understanding of architecture and technology in this area

• Excellent written communication skills

• Excellent team working skills
