About the event

Use Cases for DRI Workshop

Organised by the National Federated Compute Services NetworkPlus programme, this workshop aims to build representative use cases from existing and future users of large-scale compute and data resources across a broad range of (inter)disciplinary domains.

During the workshop, we are looking to broaden engagement with users of infrastructure so as to:

  • Elicit knowledge & experiences in utilising infrastructure from the group and identify common challenges;

  • Develop understanding of how federation might support your research needs;

  • Facilitate the process for participants to produce and disseminate an agreed media artefact (e.g. video).

Use cases will represent the breadth across UK institutions and disciplines, including various interdisciplinary research methods and research cultures.

Venue

The workshop takes place at the Royce Hub Building, the headquarters of the Henry Royce Institute at the University of Manchester.

Address: Royce Hub Building, Oxford Road, Manchester M13 9PL

Getting there

By train: Manchester Oxford Road and Manchester Piccadilly are the nearest stations. Both are roughly a 15–20 minute walk away, or a short bus ride.

By bus: Frequent buses run along Oxford Road from Piccadilly and the city centre towards the University campus. Get off at the University of Manchester stops.

By car: All approach routes are signposted ‘The University of Manchester’. Parking at the building is limited, so we recommend public transport. Paid parking is available in nearby University and city-centre car parks.

Accessibility: Please let us know in advance about any access requirements.

Meals

Catering will be provided throughout the workshop. If you have any dietary requirements and you have not notified us about them yet, please let us know by emailing John Maish, j.masih@qmul.ac.uk

Workshop preparation

Please come prepared with the following, depending on your role.

Researchers (use case owners)

  • A short description of your research enquiry, 100–250 words. Explain what it is and why it matters, as if you were explaining it to the general public or a 12-year-old.

  • 4–5 pieces of visual media, such as an image, a video or a 3D model, that illustrate your data, your results or the users of your research.

  • Your drafted use case template (link to follow).

  • A signed video release form (link to follow).

Infrastructure and service providers (DRI components)

  • A short description of your DRI component, 100–250 words. Focus on what makes it unique rather than describing every element, and on what it allows users to do. Again, write it as if you were explaining it to the general public or a 12-year-old.

  • 4–5 pieces of visual media, such as an image, a video or a 3D model, that illustrate how your component can be used.

  • A signed video release form (link to follow).

During the day, you will turn this material into a 2–3 minute video and an accompanying document, so the more prepared you are, the more you will get out of the session.

Photographic approval & Social media

During the workshop, we will be taking photos to document the workshop and promote it through our social media. If you do not want your photo to be taken, please let us know upon arrival at the workshop venue. If you want to promote the workshop through your social media, we will be using the hashtag #DISKAH through our social media:
