Workshop: 3D Capturing of objects with Photogrammetry (intermediate level)

The AHRC-funded Hot Source! project is organising a two-day online workshop as part of its training activities on the 6^th and 13^th of March 2024, from 2:00 – 3:00 pm. 

Photogrammetry is a technique of creating accurate 3D measurements and spatial information about objects through photography. The process of photogrammetry involves the capturing of images of an object from different angles, and the reconstruction of the digital 3D model using specialised software. The outcome of photogrammetry can be used for documentation, research, preservation, further reconstruction, monitoring, interactive 3D visualisations and educational content. 

This workshop is designed for researchers who are working with 3-dimensional physical objects with significant textured surfaces, and who are interested in exploring new techniques for examining and documenting them. 

This workshop will be delivered in a series of two sessions. During the first session, the participants will learn about the operation principles of photogrammetry and the process they have to follow for capturing the object. Following the theory, the participants will capture images of the object of interest in their own time. 

During the second session, the participants will learn about the different types of software that are available and how to use them. Then, during the two hours of the practical session, they will start creating their digital 3D models, using the photographs already captured. Pre-captured photographic material can be provided for participants who, for unexpected reasons, were not able to attend session 1. 

Following this workshop, participants can register for a 1:1 ‘practical surgery’ session on the 27^th of March. 

This is an intermediate-level workshop. Prior knowledge of the basic elements of digital photography is required. If you do not have this, the Introduction to digital photography and digitisation (beginner level) is recommended. If more knowledge is needed about refining and sharing 3D models, the Refining and Sharing 3D Models of Objects workshop is suggested.
